We knew there was going to be a bit of a turn-out because the RSVPs ran way past the 100 mark on the day the invites were dispatched, but I don’t think any of us involved in Lloyd Johnson: The Modern Outfitter expected such a huge gathering for last night’s private view.
With everyone on top form and splendidly attired, the party to launch the show was a testament to the widely-held respect and affection for Lloyd and his work.

Today Lloyd discussed the exhibition with Robert Elms on London’s local BBC station 94.9. He appears about an hour in – listen again here (link may not work outside of UK/will be up for seven days after broadcast).

Brilliant thing (that I’d not ‘registered’ until the show) was that the style transcended so many subcultures whilst managing to keep an edge.
I’m sure everyone who participated in the Johnson’s story whether as customer or staff, still feels that they “owned” a part of the Johnson’s secret. I can’t think of many other designers/retailers who have managed the same.

I visited I think all the London shops including one around World’s End where I got my Vincent boots, which I still keep along a pair of Biker’s ones and a pair of Jods.
Two shirt and a LaRocka waistcoat. This is my little collection.
By the way I am a reader of your The Look (both editions) and an Anarchy shirt makes my blog cover.

Cyril Jordan and Chris Wilson of the Flamin’ Groovies turned me on to the store. All of the Groovies wore Johnson’s attire. I’m originally from London and was living near San Francisco (and seeing the Groovies every weekend). A friend of mine shopped for me: polka dot shirts, striped shirts, tab collar shirts, and a black velvet suit. I literally wore them until they fell apart. There’s nothing over here that compares to Johnson’s! No other store covered so many styles, and was appreciated by so many generations of music fans. Any books or literature on this fantastic store would be highly appreciated. Dave.
