Derek Boshier: From Doris To Chemical Cowboys, Chelsea College Of Art January 18
This month’s arts calendar in London is marked by a rare treat: From Doris To Chemical Cowboys, a talk by the great British artist Derek Boshier at Chelsea College Of Art’s lecture theatre on January 18.
Los Angeles-based Boshier will be discussing recent projects as well as providing insights into earlier achievements, including his part in the Pop Art explosion of the 60s and his Texas work of the 80s.
Painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, books, film, installation and graphic arts, Boshier has explored all these avenues of expression since he emerged alongside fellow Royal College graduates David Hockney, Allen Jones and R.B. Kitaj and was featured with Peter Blake, Pauline Boty and Peter Phillips in Ken Russell’s 1962 BBC documentary Pop Goes The Easel.
The evening at Chelsea includes a screening of Boshier’s 1973 film Reel, which was originally shot on 16mm and is concerned with “the unexpected nature of change and the duality of situations”.
After the screening Derek and I will talk about his engagement with popular culture, his response to contemporary events and how they inform his practice; this is, after all, the man who danced in the Ready Steady Go! audience, designed and decorated the facade and interior of Swinging London store Palisades, produced a songbook for The Clash, created stage sets for David Bowie (as well as the cover of his album Lodger) and collaborated with Barney Bubbles on The Hayward’s 1979 group exhibition Lives.
From Doris To Chemical Cowboys is a free event for which booking is recommended. To reserve your place contact: info@chelseaspace.org
