This feature on five owners of interesting automobiles comes from a time long before the banalities of Top Gear.
Michael Roberts‘ photo-story was published in the October 1971 issue of the short-lived British magazine Club.
As covered here, Club was not a run-of-the-mill “men’s” publication (and had a particular interest in Mr Freedom , featuring the shop and and it’s founders Tommy Roberts, Trevor Myles and John Paul on several occasions).

February 17, 2011 at 11:24 amIsn’t this when Michael Roberts worked for ‘CLUB MAGAZINE’, before it became a full-blown tit & bum mag?. I remember him doing a western article – I put him on to Ben & Geoff at ‘WILD MUSTANG’ because they’d just done a fantastic Western photo shoot. I think maybe Roy Giles took the photos which Geoff’s still got.

February 17, 2011 at 12:02 pmYep – it was a great run of magazines. Michael Roberts is someone I really admire. His articles turned me onto fashion in the early to mid 70s and he’s still going strong at vanity Fair (bought one of his books as a present for Caz recently).
He’s on my interview list.
I’ll check with Dave who supplied these scans and see if we can feature the Western article.
