‘Art is the capital of capitalism’: Derek Boshier’s What Do Artists Do All Day? on BBC iPlayer
Film-maker Zara Hayes has captured the British artist Derek Boshier’s wit, intelligence and apparently boundless creative energy in her documentary for the BBC strand What Do Artists Do All Day?.
The answer, apparently, is work bloody hard and enjoy life to the limit. LA-based Boshier is seen at home, at his favourite breakfast joint, Rick’s in Silverlake, at work in his studio and buying paper for his overscale drawings at Paper Chase on Sunset.
Intercut with titling in his distinctive hand and footage from Ken Russell’s documentary Pop Goes The Easel – which introduced Boshier, Peter Blake, Pauline Boty and Peter Phillips to a wider audience way back in 1962 – the artist reflects on such subjects as being an expat in California and the nature of dedicating your life to art.
“Art is the capital of of capitalism,” is one aside betraying the fact that Boshier’s political edge remains unblunted.
