Last week I recovered this from the back pocket of a pair of trousers; a page torn from a copy of Mojo found on the tube a few months back.
The fabulous image of two of my all-time faves in interview mode (and barnet excelsis) was taken by James Hamilton; others of Patti Smith from the same session can be found at Ecstatic Peace, Thurston Moore’s operation which published a book of Hamilton’s work.
Smith’s career as a rock critic was covered in In Their Own Write (for which I also talked to her musical foil, Lenny Kaye).
As mentioned in Smith’s formidable memoir Just Kids, the knee tattoo was inscribed by another heroine, Vali Myers.
