SXSW installations: The look of music

If you’re in Austin TX – and there’s a chance you might be since hundreds of thousands of people have descended on the city for the annual SXSW film/music/interactive conflab taking place there this week – try and nip along to the Ray Ban Legendary Visions house at 78 Rainey Street on the eastside for a gander at the room collages/installations I have engineered to reflect my take on the look of music.

I was invited by the good folk of LA’s NCompass – Nick Ebeling, Steve Pross and Sheri Timmons – who also installed the collages.

These reflect my visual preoccupations and comprise imagery from The Look and Reasons To Be Cheerful and their related blogs. Heroes, people I have collaborated with and personal friends pop up all over the place, from Jeff Dexter, Mark Powell and Lloyd Johnson to Judy NylonNick Lowe, Tommy Roberts, Boy George and the sorely missed Malcolm McLaren.

Also on show are the very special Stiff logo lightboxes and Kate Moross’ Barney Bubbles video installation, the former commissioned by Sheri and the latter by me (for last year’s Glastonbury Festival).

My contributions are in august company, sharing the house with design group Hipgnosis and photographer Henry Diltz; the installations have to be temporary since the building will be demolished very soon.

If you’re in town, enjoy the visual overload we have prepared for you – each room has a bespoke soundtrack to create an immersive experience.

Thanks to Steve Pross for the photos and to Steve, Sheri and Nick for making it all possible.
