Pictures from an exhibition: Snap Crackle & Pop at The Lightbox
These images are from the private view for The Lightbox gallery’s exhibition Snap Crackle & Pop (about British pop art and it’s influence on culture); I contributed exhibits and advice after being approached by BBC TV’s Katherine Higgins (who sure knows her stuff).
This excellent show was opened on Friday by Peter Blake. Among the attendees were John and Molly Dove, Lloyd Johnson, Mike Ross of Ritva and Paul Weller (the subject of the gallery’s current companion exhibition of photographs by Lawrence Watson).
Tommy Roberts contributed pieces from his store Mr Freedom, and there are the wine labels designed by George Hardie for Roberts’ restaurant Mr Feed’Em (given to me by Keith Wainwright).
I also helped Higgins make the connection with Lloyd Johnson, resulting in a number of exhibits including his early 70s “Sea Cruise” print jacket.
The exhibition includes the first Barney Bubbles record sleeve design (for his mid-60s self-recorded Merry Christmas message to friends).
For The Lightbox curator Michael Regan, this sealed a connection; he knew and worked with Bubbles on the 1979 Lives exhibition at The Hayward curated by Boshier.
The launch on Friday night provided the opportunity for a mingling of minds; while Blake delightedly took delivery of the second edition of Barney Bubbles book, Weller talked Ritva with Ross and chatted to Johnson about the forthcoming retrospective at Chelsea Space.
