When Steve McQueen modelled for i-D
A few years back over dinner in New York when I was working on The Story of The Face, the British artist and filmmaker Steve McQueen mentioned that he (“well, it was mainly my back and my arse”) had appeared in an i-D fashion shoot when he was a student.
On my return I found it in my copy of 1989’s indispensable The i-D Bible Part Two and then forgot about it till a conversation with a couple of American curators what seems like centuries ago but was in fact in late February.
I couldn’t find the shoot again in my back issues of the magazine and then supreme stylist Simon Foxton came to my aid, reminding me where The Uniform Backlash, which he styled with George Goodman and was photographed by Daniel Kohlbacher, had appeared.
