Malcolm McLaren in Witches trenchcoat on the steps of the British Museum 1983
This portrait of Malcolm McLaren was captured among the columns outside the entrance to London’s august British Museum by Andy Rosen in 1983.
In the photograph taken during promotion of the Duck Rock album, which was released at the start of 1983, McLaren sported a rare trenchcoat design from the Witches collection he and Vivienne Westwood debuted on the catwalk that spring.

The trench was constructed in the exaggerated silhouette of other Witches garments and was cut from rectangles of waterproofed cotton. There is a cream one in the V&A’s collection.
The one worn by McLaren in Rosen’s photograph was made from black cotton with grey fades. This material was also used for earlier designs by the McLaren/Westwood partnership, including the elaborate scoop-necked Victorian-style dress and Pirate trousers with suede fly inset shown above.
The McLaren portrait features in The End Of Generation X, an exhibition showcasing Rosen’s work which opens at Camden’s Proud Gallery tomorrow.
